An Open Letter to the Electoral College
An open note to the Electoral College, asking you to vote with your conscience and reject Donald Trump.
We are living through an unprecedented test of our democratic system, and it demands an unconventional response. Donald Trump lost the popular vote by more than 2 million ballots, and he is widely regarded as dangerously unfit for the office of the presidency, not just by nearly every major newspaper in the country, but by national leaders within the GOP, including John McCain and Arnold Schwarzenegger, who have both spoken eloquently of the need to reject his candidacy.
Trump has consistently shown himself to be unsuited for the office of president, which demands a sober and balanced disposition, and a capacity to comport one’s self according to the basic norms of civilized society. He has shown himself again and again to lack such qualities, engaging regularly on social media to publicly insult comedians, reporters, beauty pageant contestants, and people with disabilities in the most childish terms. How will he deal with difficult trade negotiations or potential military conflicts?
Donald Trump advocates an anachronistic and deeply-disturbing isolationism, repudiating the key international structures and alliances that have held the Free World together since the end of World War II, casting doubt on our most vital strategic commitments to NATO and Japan, and, bizarrely, repeatedly embracing the bellicose and despotic Vladimir Putin, whose illegal invasion of Crimea led to heavy international sanctions, not just by the US but by our close EU allies as well.
Donald Trump has no political experience whatsoever. He routinely suggests policies that would be patently illegal, such as embracing a return to an ignominious and discredited torture regime and suggesting that flag burners be stripped of their citizenship.
And he has repeatedly shown himself to be hostile to the ideals of pluralism that form the very heart of our democratic republic, showing a disturbing obsession with the dangers posed by Latinos and Muslims, many millions of whom live in the US as peaceful and productive members of our society. By selecting the noxious fringe media magnate Steve Bannon as his strategy director, he has publicly embraced a man who is widely recognized as a peddler in hatred, fear, and intolerance of women and minorities.
I’m calling on you to look into your hearts and ask yourselves if this is truly the man who is capable of deciding whether or not to send our armed forces into battle, of negotiating trade deals on our behalf, of setting our national agenda, and authorizing covert operations around the world.
This man, who in 2014 Tweeted the following: “Every time I speak of the haters and losers I do so with great love and affection. They cannot help the fact that they were born fucked up!”
This man is to decide whether or not to launch the nuclear arsenal?
There is one last line of defense against this man taking the most powerful political office in the world, and that is you. Do not let this happen, the world is counting on you.
